John Suhr begann seine Karriere nach ersten Erfahrungen im Gitarrenbau für den Eigenbedarf in den ’80s in ‘Rudy’s Music Stop’ in New York City. Zu dieser Zeit wurden die legendären ‘Pensa-Suhr’-Gitarren erschaffen. Unter diesem Markennamen baute John Suhr Gitarren unter anderem für Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Lou Reed, Reb Beach, Victor Bailey (Pensa-Suhr Bass) oder Chuck Loeb.

Einige Zeit später nahm Suhr eine Anstellung beim Fender Custom Shop als Senior Master Builder an. Neben dem Bau hochwertigster Custom-Gitarren war John Suhr auch für Forschung und Entwicklung sowie Produktinnovationen zuständig. Zu seinen Kunden gehörten hier Michael Landau, Scott Henderson, Doug Aldrich und erneut Peter Frampton.

Seine eigene zunächst kleine Firma eröffnete John Suhr dann 1997, angetrieben vom Streben nach größtmöglicher Qualität in Fertigung, Design und Musikalität. Mittlerweile vertreibt JS Technologies weltweilt neben Gitarren auch Verstärker, Tonabnehmer und Effektgeräte, die allesamt einen exzellenten Ruf geniessen.

Diesem hervorragenden Ruf wird Suhr mit der hier vorgestellten ‘Standard Carve Top’ absolut gerecht. “Standard ist hier eigentlich gar nichts” möchte man angesichts des zauberhaften, geschnitzten Quilted-Maple-Tops in ‘Copperhead Burst’, der makellosen Verarbeitung und der intelligenten Ausstattung ausrufen.

Die Suhr ist durch die Tonabnehmerbestückung mit je einem Suhr Humbucker in der Steg- sowie der Halsposition und einem Suhr ML Singlecoil in der Mitte enorm vielseitig und glasklar in allen Schaltkombinationenen. Von funky-clean bis knallhartem Rockbrett kann diese Suhr wirklich alles! Die Spielbarkeit des eher schlanken Ahornhalses ist mit Compound-Radius modern und intuitiv, das Setup ist nun auch auf Spitzenniveau. Und wunderschön ist das Instrument mit dem ‘Matching Headstock’ obendrein auch noch.

Der Zustand der 2013 bei Suhr in den USA gebauten Gitarre könnte besser kaum sein. Nicht mal feine Kratzer auf der Rückseite sind zu erkennen. Einzig eine kleine Macke im Griffbrett veranlasst uns, die Gitarre nicht als “wie neu” anzupreisen. Die Auslieferung der Standard Pro erfolgt im originalen Hardshell Case mit dem zugehörigen Tremolohebel und dem Spec-Sheet.
