2014 Gibson Custom Shop ’58 Explorer Mahogany Limited

Vorgestellt im Jahr 1958 erging es der Explorer zunächst genau wie der Flying V oder der aus heutiger Sicht noch immer sehr ungewöhnlichen Moderne. Sie floppten gewaltig. Gerade einmal 19 Explorer wurden im ersten Jahr hergestellt. Dabei hatte sich Ted McCarty, damals Gibson-Präsident, doch etwas mehr von den drei Modellen erwarten dürfen. Jedoch kam es ganz anders und die Explorer verschwand für knapp zwei Jahrzehnte von der Bildfläche. Erst als Ibanez eine fast 1:1-Kopie der Explorer mit Erfolg verkaufte, erschien 1976 die Explorer wieder im Gibson-Programm. Nun jedoch aus Mahagoni und nicht mehr aus Korina, was der Explorer zwar etwas an Luftigkeit und Leichtigkeit im Klangbild nahm, ihr dafür aber etwas mehr Druck und ausgeprägtere Bässe bescherte.

Ebenso verhält es sich bei dieser Explorer ´58, die ebenfalls komplett aus Mahagoni gefertigt wurde. Beim Griffbrett kommt allerdings wieder ganz klassisch Palisander zum Einsatz. Was die ´58 Custom Shop Reissue jedoch mit dem Urspungsentwurf gemein hat ist der deutlich kräftigere Hals, der mit seinem ausgeprägtem D-Profil schon fast formatfüllend in der Hand liegt. Hier ist die Bezeichnung “Baseball-Schläger” schon beinahe angebracht. Aber er spielt sich absolut fantastisch…

Die Kombination aus Goldhardware und einem Finish in TV Yellow sieht einfach nur klasse aus. Ausgestattet mit Custom Wound Custom Bucker Pickups macht die Explorer aber auch am Amp eine hervorragende Figur. Zumindest hätte Ed die Gibson am liebsten mit nach Hause genommen.

Der Zustand könnte besser kaum sein. Auch die Bünde zeigen keine Gebrauchsspuren und der Plek Scan zeiget keinerlei Auffälligkeiten. Von uns mit einem frischen Setup und einer tollen Bespielbarkeit ausgestattet, ist sie nun bereit für die Bühnen dieser Welt. Das Potential hätte sie.
Im Lieferumfang ist neben dem originalen Gibson-Koffer samt Kofferschlüsseln das gesamte Case Candy und selbstverständlich das Zertifikat enthalten. 

First revealed in 1958, the Explorer was presented at the same time as the Flying V, even from today’s point of view they are still very modern. They failed enormously. Only 19 explorers were produced in the first year. Ted McCarty, then president of Gibson, had expected a little more from the three models. However, things turned out quite differently and the Explorer disappeared from the scene for almost two decades. Only when Ibanez sold an almost 1:1 copy of the Explorer with success in 1976 did the Explorer appear again in the Gibson program. Now made from mahogany and no longer from corina, the sound has a little more pressure and more pronounced basses.

The same goes for this Explorer 58, which is also made entirely of mahogany. On the fingerboard, however, classical rosewood is used. However, what the 58 Custom Shop Reissue has in common with the original design is the distinctly stronger neck, which with its pronounced D-profile fits beautifully in the hand with its full size. The term “baseball bat” is almost used here. But he plays himself absolutely fantastic….

The combination of gold hardware and a finish in TV Yellow just looks great. Equipped with Custom Wound, Custom Bucker pickups, the Explorer also cuts an excellent figure at the amp. At least Ed Bennett wanted to take the Gibson home with him.

The condition could hardly be better. The frets do not show any signs of wear and the Plek scan does not show any abnormalities. Equipped by us with a fresh setup and great playability, it is now ready for the world’s stages. It would have the potential.
Included with this guitar is the original Gibson case with case keys, the complete case candy and of course the certificate.

Die Explorer zeigte im Scan keine Auffälligkeiten. Neben der Justage des Trussrods war daher nur eine Einstellung der Brücke notwendig, um ein erstklassiges Setup zu erreichen.

Die Saitenlage liegt gemessen im 12. Bund nun bei:

  • E: 1,75mm
  • e: 1,31mm

Die Bünde bilden über dem Griffbrett einen gemessenen Radius von 10.2″ bis 12.4″ ab, die Bespielbarkeit dieses seltenen Instrumentes ist durch die durchgeführten Maßnahmen nun hervorragend.
